From 2022 to Today – Progress in Wetland Restoration

    29 October 2024, 12:00 CET

The work on wetland restoration is ongoing, and we are continuing according to the established plan. "This is truly exciting and long-term work. Restoring these important wetlands makes a difference, and we’re doing it on a scale that very few have attempted before", says Hans Djurberg, Head of Sustainability at Kaunis Iron.

In 2022, we began work on wetland restoration. Now, we’ve made some progress and have restored about 315 of a total 826 hectares.

    – This is truly exciting and long-term work. Restoring these vital wetlands makes a difference, and we're doing it on a scale that very few have attempted before. It requires us to be both curious and courageous, but also humble in the face of the challenge, says Hans Djurberg, Head of Sustainability at Kaunis Iron.

The measures are tied to conditions in our environmental permit, and we are restoring wetland and forest to minimize the impact that mining activities have on biodiversity. We are currently working intensively according to the laid-out plan, aiming to maximize the benefits of our efforts, which is an ongoing learning process.

    – We still have a lot to learn, particularly regarding the best design for the dams. It’s important that we’re willing to try different solutions to find those that have the intended impact both in the short and long term, says Hans Djurberg.
