Kaunis Iron Adjusts Operations According to Plan

Adjustment of Operations
As of this fall, mining operations in Tapuli will enter a phase with lower waste rock production, which is a natural part of the mining cycle. Kaunis Iron expects that the production decrease may affect around 30–40 positions, mainly within the IF Metall workers’ collective. Since staffing needs fluctuate over time, the company is evaluating different scenarios to manage the transition and is exploring the possibility of offering alternative work opportunities within the organization.
Awaiting a Decision on the Future
Kaunis Iron submitted its application for existing and expanded mining operations as early as 2018, but seven years later, it has still not received a final decision regarding its future.
"The initial plan was to counterbalance the reduced waste rock production in Tapuli by starting production at other deposits. However, due to the prolonged permit process, this is not currently an option. Without a final permit, we have been unable to carry out the necessary investments and preparations for startup," says Johan Oja, Site Manager in Kaunisvaara.
Long-Term Responsibility and Support for Employees
Kaunis Iron has deep roots in Tornedalen and is fully aware that this adjustment impacts both employees and the community as a whole.
"We want to be transparent about the situation this fall while also emphasizing that this is entirely in line with our mining and production plan. Of course, it is unfortunate that this comes so soon after the cost-saving measures we implemented at the end of last year due to the challenging market conditions. Our union organizations have been informed, but no formal union negotiations regarding redundancies have started yet. We will handle the process responsibly, in close dialogue with the unions," says Lars Bogren, HR Manager at Kaunis Iron.
Kaunis Iron remains committed to maintaining a long-term and sustainable mining operation in Tornedalen. The company continues to work towards a future where operations can develop and contribute to employment and growth in the region.
